Australian Institute of Management - Celebrating 65 years

History of the Institute

The Australian Institute of Management was formed over sixty years ago as part of a national vision to assist managers to secure their future in the ever changing business environment.

Beginning its days in 1941 as the Foremanship Association and then the Institute of Industrial Management of Australia, AIM received its official name change in 1949.

Over the next decade AIM offices in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney were joined by divisions in Brisbane, Hobart and Perth. An office in the ACT followed in 1958 and then in Darwin in the mid 1970s. These state divisions were established in order to keep close ties with the local community of managers and leaders and to feed into what became a National AIM structure.

The first federal edition of Management Digests - a precursor to Management Today - was published in 1955 which included a national collection of management information, statistics and theories. The first National Salary Survey was conducted by AIM NSW in 1970.

Detailed information on the Institute's history is available in two publications:

  • Fogarty, J. Leaders in Management: Australian Institute of Management 1941 - 1991, AIM Victoria, Melbourne.
  • Rogers, L. The Australian Institute of Management: A history of the foundation and development 1938 - 1964, np.
