Jeffrey Pfeffer: Evidence-Based Management

Jeffrey PfefferMost managers would expect their own decisions, and those of their bosses, would be based on hard evidence, facts and reputable research. But the reality is often very different. We get seduced by our past experience, fads and what others are doing, ideology and other mythology and try what we think works, even when the evidence may point to a very different reality.

Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer has spent much of his research career working to develop and describe the best evidence on how companies ought to be managed, and teaching managers the right mind-set and methods for practicing evidence-based management.

Jeffrey Pfeffer: ‘The hard facts and dangerous half-truths of management’

"The best organisations have the best talent", "Financial incentives drive company performance", "Firms must change or die".

Popular adages like these drive business decisions every day. Yet too much common management “wisdom” isn’t wise at all. Instead, unsubstantiated knowledge based on “best practices” such as these, can actually prove to be poor, incomplete, or outright obsolete. Worse, legions of managers use this dubious knowledge to make decisions that are hazardous to organisational health. The facts about what works are out there. So, why don’t managers use them?

Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, will illustrate how your organisation’s managers can make better decisions if those decisions are based on evidence of what works elsewhere, as well as within your own organisation.
