People matters is a leadership course for current and aspiring team leaders within the Queensland public sector.
Designed by the Public Service Commission and delivered by AIM, it provides the practical skills and confidence to effectively manage people, performance and change. The program helps leaders to understand their leadership style and team dynamics to improve workplace engagement and productivity.
The program combines a self-paced online module, 3 days of face to face action-learning workshops and a workplace practice activity, completed by participants with the support of their supervisors.
People matters provides the opportunity to not just learn about leadership, but to put your learnings into practice.
People matters aligns to the Queensland Workforce Capability Success Profile for team leaders.
We know that People matters works, with 96% of past participants surveyed saying they acquired practical strategies they could apply in the workplace, and 90% of participants increasing their knowledge and confidence in leading people.

People matters forms one of the first stages on the leadership roadmap for public sector employees outlined by the Public Service Commission.
This course will help you to:
- Develop practical skills and confidence to manage people, performance and change
- Understand the responsibilities of a Queensland public sector team leader
- Apply the practical skills and knowledge you have developed to meet changing organisational and workforce needs
People matters is available in two delivery modes:
- as an open scheduled program (where participants join a mixed group from agencies across the Queensland public sector), or
- as a private in-house program.
Open programs are scheduled throughout the year across Queensland.
For in-house programs, please contact AIM to discuss tailoring People matters to your agency's needs, including delivery location (regional or metropolitan). Queensland public sector agencies can engage AIM to conduct in-house programs under a Public Service Commission standing offer agreement, without the requirement for a tendering process.
People matters is only available in Queensland.
- Pre-program skills evaluation
Participants and their supervisors complete a skills review to identify key development areas.

Participants complete an online self-paced module.

Facilitated workshops days 1 & 2 are offered over consecutive days, with day 3 usually offered two weeks later, allowing time to complete the workplace practice activity and consolidate your learnings.
- Workplace practice activity
Participants complete a workplace practice activity using a real-world scenario from their own workplace. This activity helps to translate the program learnings into positive new behaviors in the workplace.
