What is Recognition?
At AIM, we offer two formal processes for recognising prior learning and experience:
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Recognition for skills gained through work, volunteering, or life experience.
- Credit Transfer: Recognition for previous formal study with another accredited provider.
At AIM, we're committed to recognising the value of your past experience—so you can focus on what's next.

Appeals and Support FAQ
Yes, you can apply for both Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer. Each process recognises different types of prior learning—RPL is based on informal or non-accredited experience, while Credit Transfer applies to previously completed, nationally recognised training. Eligibility for either pathway will depend on your individual circumstances and the course requirements. AIM’s team can help assess which option—or combination—is best suited to your learning history.
The time it takes to complete an RPL assessment can vary. It depends on the qualification you are applying for, how comprehensive your evidence is, and how quickly you respond to requests for additional information. On average, AIM aims to finalise RPL outcomes within three weeks of receiving all required documentation.
Yes, you may be granted partial credit depending on which units of competency from your previous studies match the units in your current qualification. Only equivalent or closely aligned units will be considered for transfer. Our academic team will review your transcripts to determine what credit can be applied.
RPL and Credit Transfer can be applied to many qualifications offered at AIM, including Certificates and Diplomas across business, leadership, and project management. Whether you're transitioning from previous study or bringing workplace experience to the table, AIM recognises a broad range of backgrounds. The final outcome depends on the evidence submitted and alignment with the course structure.
Absolutely. AIM provides support to help you explore and understand your options for recognition. Our Course Advisors and Student Services team can guide you through the RPL and Credit Transfer application process, assess your eligibility, and help you prepare the appropriate documentation. We also work with qualified assessors who will review your submissions and ensure you’re on the right path to formal qualification.
