August edition of Leading Edge with Emma Skea

Tuesday, August 16, 2016

Welcome to the August edition of Leading Edge. This month our introduction comes from Emma Skea AIMs, who has recently completed an internship with the AIM events team in Brisbane.

Before her internship, Emma was a Student Member with AIM who volunteered as an AIMbassador. Here, she reflects upon her internship  at the AIM office and shares what she has gained from the experience.

"I am currently studying a Bachelor of Business Management at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Although I had an interest in event management before my internship, I had never actually worked in events. Going in, I knew that it wouldn't be what I expected it to be, but in the end, it was so much more than what I could have asked for. I had the opportunity to work with the incredible AIM Engagement and Events team, learn the ins and outs of how Member events are prepared for, set up and executed, as well as have the opportunity to work closely with business people I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet without the internship.

I was also very lucky to have the support of  the team that I worked with. They encouraged me to pitch my ideas for National Networking Day and I am very excited to see some of them come to life on Monday August 29th.

Since my internship ended, I have been trusted to be the on-site AIM contact at an event where it was my responsibility to ensure it ran smoothly, further allowing myself to meet new people, listen to some awesome speakers and create even more contacts on the Sunshine Coast that I didn't have before.

This internship has taught me so much. It helped me decide on my degree minor – I have chosen to do Event Management. I have learnt that such a lot of work goes into the behind-the scenes-of an event, and that so many people are required to make it successful. It isn't as easy as it looks."

AIM is delighted to launch the Internship Program as part of the AIM Student Membership offering. Developing the leaders of tomorrow is an essential part of AIM's reason for being.
